ie9 and ie10 script errors

in ie9 and ie 10 i get script errors that i don't get in previous versions of the browser or in Firefox or chrome

Error: Object doesn't support property or method 'attachEvent'

I've tried updating Jquery bt my menu script stops functioning - before i scrap it and start again i wondered if you had come across this before
