.val() doesn't work with empty value

That extra logic wasn't necessary, we can just use .val() instead.  http://github.com/jquery/jquery/commit/e87b090cb706b495b6c48e960d6c059c7fbddbd9

Please follow the  bug reporting guidlines and use  jsFiddle when providing test cases and demonstrations instead of pasting the code in the ticket.
