Remove the use of internal .push/splice/sort methods

They're not really public methods - and should be removed.

Un-fixed in SVN rev [6275]. We really can't afford to make this change (since it breaks IE).

Please follow the  bug reporting guidlines and use  jsFiddle when providing test cases and demonstrations instead of pasting the code in the ticket.
