html() Function NEVER works.

Description

a very simple function like alert($('#example').html()); doesent work. error: Syntax error, unrecognized expression:

Anything i try with html() doesent work. I have 1.7.1 jquery. I also have jquery ui, but even without it, it doesent work. always error

Please follow the  bug reporting guidlines and use  jsFiddle when providing test cases and demonstrations instead of pasting the code in the ticket.
