jquery animate() jerky animation on windows xp IE

I am making a simple image slider using just jquery and when the animation loads the images slide of they page but in a very jerky unclean manner.

I have used this before in other places and this doesn't seem to happen.

Is there a best practice for this or a way that animating an image will be smoother (ie. placing it as a background image on a wrapper, putting it in a list item, etc...)
